Lots of laboratory awards to celebrate!
- Samantha Heldman won 1st place at the Wayne State 3-Minute Thesis Competition and will travel to the Midwest Regional 3MT Competition to represent WSU!
- Samantha Heldman won the Jane Ellen Simmons Award through SOT Mixtures Specialty Section for Best Virtual Presentation.
- Roxanne Bérubé won the CIAPE Postdoctoral Trainee Award for contributions to the study of EDCs.
- Roxanne Bérubé won the Out Toxicologists & Allies Postdoctoral Fellow Achievement Award through SOT.
- Kyle Siegel won the SOT Graduate Student Travel Award for the 2024 Annual Meeting.
January 2024
Samantha Heldman and Kyle Siegel presented at the 2024 Graduate Student Research Presentation Day at Wayne State. Samantha was awarded second place in the poster competition!
Our lab will be traveling to the Society of Toxicology meeting in March with six accepted abstracts!

New co-author paper published in Environmental Pollution, "Characterizing azobenzene disperse dyes and related compounds in house dust and their correlations with other organic contaminant classes".
Rachelle Hecht joined the lab as a PhD student and will be initiating her research projects over the course of the next year!
Hussein Ajini joined the lab as an undergraduate researcher and will be helping out with various lab projects!

New co-author paper published in Nature Reviews Endocrinology that focuses on the policy situation surrounding endocrine disrupting chemicals, roadblocks to regulation, and potential solutions to these issues.

Roxanne Bérubé received a SNAP award from the Department of Pharmacology for ~$9,000 to fund RNAseq experiments on benzene-exposed mice - in collaboration with Marianna Sadagurski's laboratory.

Praneeth Goli has joined the lab as an MS student and will be completing his thesis research over the course of the academic year!
Darya Aminioroomi has joined the lab as an undergraduate researcher and will be helping out with various lab projects.

Aicha Khalaf (winner of an Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program award) presented a poster at the WSU UROP Conference for Undergraduate Research.
Five members from the Kassotis Lab attended the Society of Toxicology 2023 annual meeting in Nashville, TN! We presented four poster presentations on diverse lab projects and caught up on lots of great science all around.

Samantha Heldman received a SNAP award from the Department of Pharmacology for $10,000 to fund RNAseq experiments on LCM mixture-exposed zebrafish.
Roxanne Bérubé was awarded a competitive National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) postdoctoral fellowship to fund the next two years of her postdoctoral training.

New co-author paper published with Leo Trasande in Pediatric Clinics of North America: The Pediatrician's Role in Protecting Children from Environmental Hazards.
Our first postdoc, Matt LeFauve, has accepted a permanent position as a Toxicologist at the US EPA office in Chicago!

Our lab attended the 2022 Michigan Society of Toxicology meeting on October 18th and presented data from three ongoing projects in the lab!
Drs. Bérubé and LeFauve presented posters on ethoxylates and complex mixture projects.
Samantha Heldman won 1st place for her symposium presentation on liquid crystal chemicals!
Co-author paper published with the Petriello Lab in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology: Exposure to a mixture of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances modulates pulmonary expression of ACE2 and circulating hormones and cytokines.

Another collaborative effort published on profiling all the chemicals used in food contact packaging!: Systematic evidence on migrating and extractable food contact chemicals: Most chemicals detected in food contact materials are not listed for use.

Articles discuss state of the evidence for molecular mechanisms promoting obesity (I), causal evidence for obesogens (II), and assays available and emerging to measure obesogens (III).

Awarded a K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award through the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to further evaluate indoor contaminants for their ability to perturb metabolic health.
